Reflections...

June 13, 2011
With my next race less than a week away, my dad and I decided to go for an open water swim.  When I swim in open water I like to throw my Garmin GPS watch into my cap because that is the only way to track distance properly. Unfortunately, with the combination of my rather large watch and my lengthening hair, I feel like I need an extra large cap because there just isn't enough room!  So as I was finishing my open water mile, I felt my cap starting to slip up.  During the swim I did stop a few times to pull my cap down, but I was so close to the finish that I decided to just keep swimming.  And then my cap popped up over my ear.  Ugh, I hate when that happens!  Of course, it gave me some flashbacks to when I very first started triathlon.  Which brings me to when I started learning how to swim.

The first time Todd showed up to the pool to teach me how to swim I was ready by the pool with my cap on... but not over my ears.  I am pretty sure Todd laughed out loud because with a cap on my ears stick so far out to the sides I am sure I looked absolutely ridiculous!  I love to look back on those pictures from my first year in triathlon, which really wasn't all that long ago.  In my very first race I wore a black onsie that had a broken zipper (I broke it the night before when I was practicing), so I had to hold it shut with a safety pin.  My ears were sticking out of my cap on the swim and I am wearing long socks with smiley faces on the bike and run.  Good times!  That was also the one and only race I did on a road bike, my dad's Trek 2100.

Looking back now I think it is crazy how far I have come in only 4 seasons!  I still can't believe that one day this idea popped into my head as my soccer career was coming to an end.  And I can honestly say I would not change any of my triathlon past.  I think that is the great part of triathlon, the sport has so much to give.  I met my fiance and soon-to-be husband Todd, my best friend Becca and strengthened my relationship with my dad.  I have also met so many great women on the Playmakers team... Becca dragged me to a practice last year and I am actually starting to like running!

Strange how something so simple as my ear popping out of my cap can make me look back and appreciate triathlon!

Grand Rapids Tri Done!

June 9, 2011
So last week was a very big week for me!  On Friday I took my COMLEX Level 1 exam, which is the very first board exam I have to take as a medical student.  I think it went really well, but it takes 4 to 6 weeks to get my scores back, so we will see.  I felt pretty good about the exam, but I can tell you what I feel even better about: being done!  Now I get to focus on training for 3 more weeks until I start my clerkship in the hospital.  But rumor has it that there is more time for training i...

A Great Start!

April 28, 2011
It occurred to me today that I haven't written on my blog in while!  Of course I decide to wait until finals week to decide it is more fun to post on my blog than to study ACLS, which stands for Advanced Cardiac Life Support.  I have to get certified before I am allowed to go into my clerkship so hopefully I can save some lives!  But since I am feeling pretty good with my skills, I decided to get in a little update!

So the first big news was my fantastic finish at Collegiate Nationals!  I wa...

The Off Season

December 3, 2010
The off season is here!  Yesterday it snowed and the now actually stuck, which means it is officially the off season here in Michigan!  I do love the snow, it always makes everything look so pretty.  What I do not like is the 10 minute walk to class in the snow because although it is pretty, it is cold and wet!  The ski season is sneaking up and I cannot wait, it has been a long while since I have been able to downhill race.  I hope to get in some good racing this season, but no more crashes ...

Late August Add On and Petoskey

August 18, 2010
It's been a while!  Johan's went great, I finished 1st in my age group and qualified for Age Group Nationals.  After that, life got very busy.  Medical school was getting very difficult and I lost track of time.  Unfortunately I did not manage to get a July race in, mostly because the race I have planned on (Mackinaw MultiSport Mix) had a conflict with medical school, so I couldn't go.  I didn't have a chance to replace it with another July race.  So instead I am adding a race in July, which ...

8 Week Countdown to Johan's!

April 27, 2010
I keep meaning to update my blog, but with so many exams in the last two weeks of medical school, I have found it hard to find the time to write an update!  I currently have about 15 minutes until my next exam, an OMM practical, but I don't do very well with last minute studying.  So why not get a quick update in?

Right now I cannot wait for this semester to be over, it has been very tough and very challenging.  This week I was supposed to start the next phase of the training schedule that I...

First Recovery Week

March 28, 2010
So the first 4 week of my training are now over!  And I have to say, that I am already getting very excited about where my training is heading.  Before I got serious about my training, I focused on running.  I was inspired and helped for a few days when I adopted a retired racing greyhound.  But unfortunately the sweet dog that I chose was sick with a parasite infection and she also had pretty serious separation anxiety.  Since I only have room and time (barely!) for one dog, I had to bring h...

The Offseason is Officially Over!!

March 8, 2010
Well today is Monday and Todd and I are packing up and getting ready to fly back to Michigan.  Yes, I am very behind on posting!  Here is the quick update: 1 month ago on a ski trip, Todd crashed into a sign and some trees and broke his jaw.  That really affected his training (he couldn't train at all) and my training because I took care of him.  I also missed about a week of school so I could take care of him.  Then, about a week and a half ago, I got a pretty severe respiratory tract infect...

A Disappointing and Frustrating Day

January 7, 2010
Today I found out the frustration of the USAT rankings.  Last year for the 2008 season, I ranked 50th and was awarded honorable mention.  Overall, I had a good season in 2009.  I never placed lower than 2nd overall, but I wasn't able to race as much as I wanted.  I spent part of the season injured and during the entire season I was frustrated with my run, which was worse than the previous year.  I had been hoping to improve my run, but for some reason I couldn't get faster times.  It was prob...

Utah 2009-kinda 2010

January 1, 2010
About two weeks ago my second semester of medical school came to a very happy end.  I'm very proud to say that I passed all my classes and did great on my finals... I think I finally figured out a balance between training and studying.  Basically, I just took t.v. out of the equation and limited myself to one show a day, plus a little t.v. during meals.  Anyway, back to my training.  When I finished the semester I started to go crazy with training.  I had so much time!  I also have watched a ...
